Ministry of Environment Encourages Participation in Solving Plastic Problem in Coastal Areas

SIHANOUKVILLE: The Director of the Marine Plastic Waste Prevention Project in Cambodia encourages people in the community to reduce the impact of plastic use in coastal areas through the recycling and reuse of all plastic waste.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Community Solutions for a Plastic Free Beach held on Thursday, 17 February, the Advisor to the Minister of Environment and Director of the Cambodian Plastic Residue Prevention Project, Kith Chankrisna, said that community outreach and encouragement on the recycling of plastic is an important part of reducing plastic waste.

He said that the Royal Government and the Ministry of Environment have developed a strategic policy framework, as well as other laws and strategies, to manage urban solid waste, but implementing partners and the general public must work together to prevent this plastic problem in order to not leave this plastic problem for the next generation to deal with.

Through this initiative, a company called ‘TonToTon’ sells plastic loans and collaborates with community members in Sihanoukville to collect plastic from coastal areas for incineration at Chip Mong Insee Cement company in Kampot. Through this program, it is expected that more than 3,000 tons of plastic waste will be collected by the end of 2022.
